The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
