Female Victim Knifed in Birmingham City Bus Shelter Attack Dies

A woman who was stabbed in the neck during a random assault at a bus stop in Birmingham has passed away, authorities verified.

The deceased woman, aged 34 years, came under attack on Smallbrook Queensway street, right beside the Bullring shopping centre, just prior to 9 PM GMT on Friday, according to police statements.

Djeison Rafael, 21, was presented at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Monday, charged over the attack.

He was previously accused of attempted murder however after the victim's passing charges were upgraded to include murder.

Law Enforcement Actions

Authorities stated officers would be in the downtown area through Monday providing public assurance, and investigators were supporting the victim's relatives.

Investigators are requesting for witnesses who may have seen the accused, who is described as British citizen of Black ethnicity, and is believed to have been wearing an all-grey tracksuit, dark headwear, athletic shoes with a backpack.

Incident Location

The stabbing happened outside the Bullring shopping centre, opposite the main entrance to Birmingham New Street station.

Law enforcement confirmed they classified it as a random violent act with investigators stating they were working to understand why it happened.

Witness Accounts

Shalini Doal, who works nearby, described the emergency response when she finished her shift around 10 PM Friday night.

She described the scene as extremely disorderly, and said co-workers reported hearing a commotion around 9 PM.

"A lot of co-workers take public transport, ride the tramline... our safety is at risk fundamentally, in the downtown area."

Ashley Birks, 25, resident of Stoke, said he came the city quite frequently visiting his partner who lives in the city, and was concerned about what had happened.

"It causes concern for my girlfriend," he said.

"She doesn't drive employed at all of the big music venues... considering something completely unprovoked occurred, understandably, it's horrible."
