Nintendo alongside Illumination released the initial complete preview for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie this Wednesday. It was showcased in a dedicated Nintendo presentation that highlighted the upcoming animated film.
The sequel to the 2023 hit film The Super Mario Bros. Movie, this fresh entry will transport Mario to the far corners of the universe. Along the way, he discovers a new princess and a formidable new rival in Bowser Jr., the son of the King of the Koopas.
In the vein of the games from the Wii period that act as its source material, Mario will depart from the cozy environment of the Mushroom Kingdom to travel across the galaxy. On his epic voyage, he will meet again some recognizable characters, for instance the Luma, a popular character from the original cinematic release.
But it appears Mario and his sibling Luigi will battle a different foe in the form of Bowser's furious offspring, who reportedly wields metal-based powers. Interestingly, the preview for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is not exclusively centered on Galaxy-themed scenes; it also includes nods to further iconic releases like Super Mario Odyssey and Bowser's Fury.
The movie will feature once again of the initial voice actors, with Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
New additions to the ensemble for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are Brie Larson, who will bring to life Rosalina, and Benny Safdie, set to embody Bowser Jr. It was announced by Chris Meledandri, the chief executive of Illumination.
The upcoming Mario film is set to release close to the 40th anniversary of the initial Super Mario Bros. release. Apart from the cinematic release, 2026 promises to be a major period for Mario and his friends.
Nintendo has a trio of new releases officially announced for 2026, such as Mario Tennis Fever, a release on Switch 2 of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and a new Yoshi platformer titled Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is officially set to be released on April 3, 2026.
