They're Doing to America What They Performed within Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and defining occasions – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. In the course of several weeks, the American president began displaying everyone his plans for a lavish reception room two times larger than the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing to build it.

He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of deaths resulting from his reductions to USAID stands at 600,000 and increasing, and this week a study projected his energy policies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have risked – genuinely, no other president would have conceived – independently wrecking major areas of the executive mansion to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which have business with public institutions.

We went from 'the humble will receive the Earth' into 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'

As confusing as it is to watch the chief executive attempt to overturn the established notion about democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who should not find it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they transformed an image of compassion into an icon of hostility who endorses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in scripture; this change developed more gradually, through multiple decades rather than months, yet it remains unsettling through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground

Therefore allow me to outline the Savior from my upbringing, as conceptually Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and given that the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding of him because they identify as atheists or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that there are pearls of great price in the Christian story.

It is emphatically definitely not the story of a powerful ruler emerging; conversely, a baby is born to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to evade secret police. The infant develops in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his message concerns compassion for fellow humans, specifically for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Christ's response to hostility is to offer the additional cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a way to teach the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing states that when someone steals your jacket you must offer the person your additional clothing too.

The evident and direct reality that the Savior from scripture calls for a type of profound affection concentrated on the poor is what has always made Christian religion rather a provocative belief system: engaging for the general public, but owing to its inherent radicalness requiring to be controlled. During the 1950s it was contained through watering down – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it essentially blessed current circumstances.

A Struggle for the Best Within Us

So I have been encouraged to witness the steadfast resistance regarding Trump arise during the previous year. It has served as great solace to help build the initiative that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged voters to turn out in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the finest aspects within national heritage.

We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and welcome him or refuse?

America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the highest about American history, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended by relationship to elements that cause it to be unique and beautiful, specifically the model of Jesus. In all circumstances does it mean acting as if the most damaging regarding America and religious tradition never occurred; it means both humility and faith, a combination that serious national faithful should be comfortable with.
