The UK Foreign Office has added an additional eleven new countries to its official warning register about the threats of industrial alcohol contamination from adulterated spirits.
This expanded warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the incidence of reported cases" of methanol toxicity.
Just recently, officials had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, in response to multiple serious incidents like the tragic death of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being cautions that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can lead to vision loss or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hrs.
Industrial alcohol is a poisonous substance typically utilized in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This substance is not intended for ingestion.
Although it is inherently formed during the production of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the purification method.
Yet in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to cut costs, and as it is tasteless and odourless, it is very difficult to notice.
Authorities representative a senior official stated that each tourist should know the symptoms of toxic alcohol contamination.
"If you're drinking spirits overseas, opt for well-known venues and steer clear of homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the official warned.
"Should anything appears suspicious, like a hangover that's far more intense than typical or blurred eyesight – get medical help immediately."
The full list of nations identified as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol contamination currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
